The Sum of the Parts

Not long ago I held a piece of glacial ice and thought about the message it carried.

My husband and I had taken an early morning hike to witness the sunrise on this remarkable landscape. There on the horizon, perched between the mountains, was the terminus of a glacier. As I sat lost in thought at the lake's edge, drifting between the past, present and future of the glacier and icebergs protruding from the lake's surface, in various shapes and sizes, a small piece washed up at my feet. This delicate fragment of ice, continuing to diminish in size as it dripped through my finger tips, had been a part of the historic glacier that had helped shape this impressive scenery.

My thoughts wandered to an observation made by Aristotle, "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts." I understood this same principle which had empowered the glacier might also help save it. If we were all to work together the sum of our individual contributions could have a more positive outcome for these unique attributes on our precious planet because unity presents a more powerful influence.

"Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean." Ryunosuke Satoro
